Chestnut Expands Afforestation Efforts into Tennessee
January 28, 2026
We’re excited to announce the expansion of our afforestation (ARR) portfolio into Tennessee, marking the ninth state where we’ve acquired land to advance our high‑quality, nature‑based carbon removal platform. With this new addition, Chestnut now owns and manages more than 70,000 acres across the Southeast U.S., accelerating our mission to deliver large‑scale, durable climate impact.
Our first project site in Tennessee is in Fayette County, a rural community just east of Memphis. The county has seen steady population growth in recent years as people seek a quieter, more spacious lifestyle while still benefiting from proximity to Memphis for work and amenities.
The 383‑acre Anderson Farm property, formerly used for row crops, will soon begin its transformation into a thriving, climate‑resilient forest. The agricultural viability of this property has diminished due to urban expansion, and forest restoration provides a sustainable alternative use. Chestnut will plant a diverse mix of native species, including sweetgum, water oak, Shumard oak, and loblolly pine, selected for their ecological value, climate adaptability, and long-term carbon storage potential.
Delivering Co‑Benefits for Local Communities
As Fayette County continues to grow, so will the benefits of this new forest. Beyond carbon removal, the project will:
- Improve air and water quality by stabilizing soil, reducing runoff, and enhancing natural filtration
- Expand habitat for wildlife, restoring ecological connectivity across the landscape
- Provide community access for outdoor recreation such as hiking, hunting, and fishing
These co‑benefits strengthen the environmental, social, and economic fabric of the region—demonstrating what high-quality carbon projects can achieve for both people and the planet.
Chestnut’s 2025-2026 Planting Season
Chestnut’s fourth planting season began in November 2025, and we’re on track to double our restoration footprint in the Southeast by April. This season alone, we will plant over 30,000 acres with 22 million native trees, accelerating our contribution to long‑term carbon removal and ecosystem restoration across the region.
