Chestnut Carbon Acquires Land in South Carolina to Expand Afforestation Project

NEW YORK, June 4, 2025 -- Chestnut Carbon today announced its expansion into South Carolina, marking the seventh state in its Chestnut Restoration Project (the "Project"). This acquisition brings Chestnut's total landholdings to over 50,000 acres across the Southeastern U.S. Chestnut recently completed its third planting season and announced a total of 17,000,000 trees planted since 2022.
Chestnut makes its inaugural move into South Carolina with a 500-acre property in Barnwell County. This marginal parcel was being used for hay production, and the seller was looking to move on and find a more suitable property. Chestnut will restore the land to a vibrant, biodiverse forest using a mix of native tree species including loblolly pine, sweetgum, shumard and sherry bark oak, and water hickory. Chestnut will also issue hunting leases for local residents to access and enjoy the land.
This new forest will enhance regional water quality, improve air quality, and support wildlife populations. Chestnut adheres closely to Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) requirements for healthy and sustainable forest management and is the first U.S.-based project verified through FSC's Verified Impact program for Biodiversity Conservation.
The Project is the largest U.S.-based afforestation project on the Gold Standard® registry, bolstering local economies by creating valuable employment opportunities. Dozens of full-time and hundreds of seasonal positions have been added across the six states in which Chestnut operates so far; Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
