Microsoft Extends Collaboration With Chestnut With New 7M Tons Of CDR
January 30, 2025
Microsoft has signed a new deal with nature-based carbon removal provider Chestnut for the purchase of 7 million tons of high-quality credits from the Gold Standard-verified Sustainable Restoration project.
This deal builds on the original cooperation between the two companies announced back in December 2023, under which Chestnut agreed to deliver 362,000 tons of carbon removal over a period of 15 years.
With the new agreement, Chestnut will deliver the striking 7 million tons of carbon removal credits over the following 25 years from its afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) project set across Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana.
This eye-catching deal represents one of the largest ARR carbon offsets deals signed in the United States, with a magnitude that is noticeable in the space of both nature-based and engineered solutions.
The investment will serve to support Chestnut’s operations for restoring roughly 60,000 acres of land by planting over 35 million native, biodiverse hardwood and softwood trees.
